The Netherlands is the result of the depositioof silt, sand and gravel brought together ia delta by rivers and the sea: they have formed the country. These processes from the past are still recognisable ithe land's surface and substrata; geological reminders of a more dynamic past. Once the dikes were constructed, the rivers and sea were largely excluded from the countryside, and so their role ishaping the landscape is more or less over. Ithe river landscape, the rivers have beelargely restrained, but not pletely however. Sand and gravel is still very much othe move betweethe dikes, where the characteristics of the rivers are very visible. This book centres othese dynamic rivers betweethe dikes, with reference to the lowlands ithe period before channel restraint. Additionally, the history of old river courses ithe substrata partly determines the processes imoderday rivers: past and present, geology and river science are all bined.
