EDITH KERMIT ROOSEVELT(ISBN=9780375757686) 英文原版
Marvelously full-blooded, engagingly written. -- Newsweek "An endlessly engrossing book, at once of historical and humanimportance... Morris's indefatigably busy camera catches everythingthat is catchable. The result is a narrative that one will want toreturn to and mull over, conscious of the hundred and one detailsthat might have been missed the first time around, and with areader's freedom to speculate that Morris admirably deniesherself." --R.W.B. Lewis, The Washington Post "Morris excels at putting Edith in her place in charge of the FirstFamily at a heady time in American history." -- Newsweek "A splendid biography... One reads on, intrigued by the characterthat emerges." -- Chicago Sun-Times "This biography represents craftsmanship of the highestorder." -- The Christian Science Monitor "A story as fascinating and well-written as a novel." -- Worcester Telegram "A superb life story enchantingly told." -- Richmond Times-Dispatch "A warmly vivid account of a refined, intelligent, and graci

GIFT FROM THE SEA(ISBN=9780679732419)
I found a 1955 printing of this book in an old waterfront cabinand was struck by the care with which the previous owner had readit. Eve (the name inscribed inside the front cover and then againabove the heading for chapter 3) made pencil marks on nearly everyparagraph of the book, underlining a phrase, highlighting manypassages with strong vertical marks, scratching out some words thatshe seems to have found superfluous and even x-ing out wholesections that apparently missed their mark with her altogether. Tworusting paper clips isolate several pages, absent any marking atall. Anne Morrow Lindbergh's lyrical words are still relevant andpresage so many of the themes of today's most popular books:simplicity, peaceful solitude, caring for the soul, a woman findingher place in society and life. I heard that the woman who had livedin the cabin had actually passed away some time before. Thank you,Eve, for your gift... from the sea.

MARILYN MONROE(ISBN=9780609805534)
This extraordinarily thoughtful book by Barbara Leaming, aliterary star among movie-star biographers, offers the last thingyou'd expect in a book on Marilyn Monroe: new information fromverifiable sources. Sure, lots of the tragedy is familiar: anabused, confused girl from an orphanage with a mother in a madhouserises from sexual party favor for homely showbiz men to the moviesuperstar who pushes them around, until she crashes, a victim ofself-loathing and drug addiction. The thing about a tragedy is that its heroine isn't avictim--she's responsible for her fate. Leaming does scholarlyspadework, digging up hard facts from sources like UCLA's 20thCentury Fox collection and the diary-like first drafts of ArthurMiller's semiautobiographical work, and she makes sense of Monroe'smotives. She even apparently solves Monroe's suicide with cluesfrom the star's psychiatrist's letters in the Anna Freudcollection. Her last overdose may have happened just because hershrink went to dinner with his wife and she

Caravaggio 卡拉瓦乔传记(ISBN=9780241954645)
Caravaggio has rarely been seen in such depth and such reliefas in this marvellous biography. Andrew Graham-Dixon readsCaravaggio's paintings with the habits and assumptions, thoughtsand fears of his contemporaries so that we see and feel thepaintings more acutely and intensely than before. The man and hiswork emerge enriched and enlivened -- Neil Macgregor, Director OfThe British Museum Caravaggio: A Life Sacred and Profane gave meimmense pleasure and provided constant delight. It is a thrillinglesson in the art of seeing, a sensual exploration of the shadowsof Caravaggio's sometimes violent but always Christian world, adetective story with a highly satisfying ending. AndrewGraham-Dixon's ability to have a reader see a painting throughwritten language is a rare and precious gift. The book's rigour andintegrity are obvious. I trusted every word and was sorry to turnthe final page -- Peter Carey

Team of Rivals 《
From Publishers Weekly While Goodwin's introduction is a helpful summary and explanationfor why another book about Lincoln, her reading abilities arelimited: Her tone is flat and dry, and her articulation is overlyprecise. But the introduction isn't long and we soon arrive atRichard Thomas's lovely and lively reading of an excellent book. The abridgment (from 944 pages) makes it easy to follow thenarrative and the underlying theme. Pauses are often used to implyellipses, and one is never lost. But the audio version might havebeen longer, for there is often a wish to know a little more aboutsome event or personality or relationship. Goodwin's writing isalways sharp and clear, and she uses quotes to great effect. Thebook's original

BOB DYLAN IN AMERICA(ISBN=9780385529884)
"Among those who write regularly about Dylan, Wilentzpossesses the rare virtues of modesty, nuance, and lucidity ,and for that he should be celebrated andtreasured ....Wilentz is very, very good on the actualmusic. In fact, the centerpiece of his book is a vivid lookat the 'Blonde on Blonde' sessions, during which the musiciansteased and groped their way toward the album's 'thin, wild mercurysound,' in Dylan's famous de*ion."—Bruce Handy in TheNew York Times Book Review "In this often revelatory new study, Wilentzlocates Dylan's work in the context of some surprisinginfluences....The greatest gift for Dylan fans, however, isWilentz's detailed account of the making of 1966's 'Blonde onBlonde'....Unless Dylan himself writes about it in the fabled Chronicles: Volume Two , this is the definitive word onthe creation of his greatest album.
