SPEAK, MEMORY(ISBN=9780679723394)
The late Vladimir Nabokov always did things his way, andhis classic autobiography is no exception. No dry recital of dates, names, and addresses for this linguistic magician--instead, Speak, Memory is a succession of lapidary episodes, in whichthe factoids play second fiddle to the development of Nabokov'ssensibility. There is, to be sure, an impressionistic whirl throughthe author's family history (including a gallery of Tartar princesand fin-de-siècle oddities). And Nabokov's account of his tenure atSt. Petersburg's famous Tenishev School--where he counted Osip Mandelstam among hisschoolmates--offers a lovely glimpse into the heart of Russia'ssilver age. Still, Nabokov is much too artful an autobiographer topresent Speak, Memory as a slice of reality--a word, by theway, that he insisted must always be surrounded by quotationmarks.

Amazon.com Review This isn't Cynthia Lennon's first book about her legendaryex-husband. A Twist of Lennon--a slim volume that John tried tosuppress on grounds of libel--came out in 1978. But now, 25 yearsafter his death, she finally feels ready to tell the "full andtruthful story" of their life together. Why? In his foreword, sonJulian writes of their being "dismissed or at best treated asinsignificant bit players" in the story of John's life; it'sCynthia's goal, with John, to set the record straight. She doesmake a case for being more than just "the impressionable young girlwho fell for him, then trapped him into marriage," and it's movingto read, in his own words, of John's love for his son. And whilethere's nothing new in her account of the Fab Four's rise to fame,as the greatest success story of the rock era, it's a legend thatbears retelling. But most salient of all are Cynthia's sketches ofpain, regret, and intimidation. John was indeed a brilliant, lovingman, but he was also "passionately

THERE WAS A LITTLE GIRL: The Real Story of My Mother and Me
Actress and author of the New York Times bestseller Down Came the Rain, Brooke Shields, explores her relationship with her unforgettable mother, Teri, in her new memoir. Brooke Shields never had what anyone would consider an ordinary life. She was raised by her Newark-tough single mom, Teri, a woman who loved the world of show business and was often a media sensation all by herself. Brooke's iconic modeling career began by chance when she was only eleven months old, and Teri's skills as both Brooke's mother and manager were formidable. But in private she was troubled and drinking heavily. As Brooke became an adult the pair made choices and sacrifices that would affect their relationship forever. And when Brooke’s own daughters were born she found that her experience as a mother was shaped in every way by the woman who raised her. But despite the many ups and downs, Brooke was by Teri’s side when she died in 2012, a loving daughter until the end. Only Brooke knows the truth of the

GIFT FROM THE SEA(ISBN=9780679732419)
I found a 1955 printing of this book in an old waterfront cabinand was struck by the care with which the previous owner had readit. Eve (the name inscribed inside the front cover and then againabove the heading for chapter 3) made pencil marks on nearly everyparagraph of the book, underlining a phrase, highlighting manypassages with strong vertical marks, scratching out some words thatshe seems to have found superfluous and even x-ing out wholesections that apparently missed their mark with her altogether. Tworusting paper clips isolate several pages, absent any marking atall. Anne Morrow Lindbergh's lyrical words are still relevant andpresage so many of the themes of today's most popular books:simplicity, peaceful solitude, caring for the soul, a woman findingher place in society and life. I heard that the woman who had livedin the cabin had actually passed away some time before. Thank you,Eve, for your gift... from the sea.

MARILYN MONROE(ISBN=9780609805534)
This extraordinarily thoughtful book by Barbara Leaming, aliterary star among movie-star biographers, offers the last thingyou'd expect in a book on Marilyn Monroe: new information fromverifiable sources. Sure, lots of the tragedy is familiar: anabused, confused girl from an orphanage with a mother in a madhouserises from sexual party favor for homely showbiz men to the moviesuperstar who pushes them around, until she crashes, a victim ofself-loathing and drug addiction. The thing about a tragedy is that its heroine isn't avictim--she's responsible for her fate. Leaming does scholarlyspadework, digging up hard facts from sources like UCLA's 20thCentury Fox collection and the diary-like first drafts of ArthurMiller's semiautobiographical work, and she makes sense of Monroe'smotives. She even apparently solves Monroe's suicide with cluesfrom the star's psychiatrist's letters in the Anna Freudcollection. Her last overdose may have happened just because hershrink went to dinner with his wife and she

STORY OF MY LIFE, THE(ISBN=9780553213874)
As a young girl Keller was obstinate, prone to fits of violence, and seething with rage at her inability to express herself. But atthe age of 7 this wild child was transformed when, at the urging ofAlexander Graham Bell, Anne Sullivan became her teacher, an eventshe declares "the most important day I remember in all my life."(Sullivan herself had once been blind, but partially recovered hersight after a series of operations.) In a memorable passage, Kellerwrites of the day "Teacher" led her to a stream and repeatedlyspelled out the letters w-a-t-e-r on one of her hands whilepouring water over the other. This method proved a revelation:"That living world awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, joy, setit free! There were barriers still, it is true, but barriers thatcould in time be swept away." And, indeed, most of them were.

Marvelously full-blooded, engagingly written. -- Newsweek "An endlessly engrossing book, at once of historical and humanimportance... Morris's indefatigably busy camera catches everythingthat is catchable.
