This novel remains the most popular of Cooper's'Leatherstocking Tales', a classic story of the French and IndianWar. The battles and exciting pursuits, which constitute the book'splot, are rounded out by interesting Indian lore and de*ionsof the wilderness. --Masterpieces of World Literature The beauty of the unspoiled wilderness and sorrow at itsdisappearance, symbolized in Hawkeye's Mohican Indian friend, thelast of their tribe, are important themes of the novel. --MerriamWebster's Encyclopedia of Literature [Cooper's] worldwide fame attests his power of invention, for hisnovels have been popular principally for their variety of dramaticincidents. . . but. . . 作者简介 Herman Melville was born in 1819 in New York City. After his father's death he left school for a series of clerical jobs before going to sea as a young man of nineteen. At twenty-one he shipped aboard the whaler Acushnet and began a series of adventures in the South Seas that would last for three years and form the basis for his first two novels, Typee and Omoo. Although these two novels sold well and gained for Melville a measure of fame, nineteenth-century readers were puzzled by the experiments with form that he began with his third novel, Mardi, and continued brilliantly in his masterpiece, Moby-Dick. During his later years spent working as a customs inspector on the New York docks, Melville published only poems, compiled in a collection entitled Battle-Pieces, and died in 1891 with Billy Budd, Sailor, now considered a classic, still unpublished.

The Diary of a Madman and Other Stories
Review Short story by Nikolay Gogol, published in 1835 as "Zapiskisumasshedshego." Diary of a Madman, a first-person narrativepresented in the form of a diary, is the tale of Poprishchin, agovernment clerk who gradually descends into insanity. At theoutset, the narrator records his frustrations and humiliationsstraightforwardly, rationalizing various affronts to his dignity.Over time, however, reason gives way to delusion. His intermittentencounters with Sophie, the radiant daughter of his officialsuperior, provoke an obsession that leads to his "overhearing" twodogs discussing his hopelessness. As such hallucinations becomemore frequent, he finds solace--and his ultimate rationale--in anew identity as the rightful king of Spain, whose enemies haveengineered his exile. Throughout the story, interludes of sanityprovide striking counterpoint to the deepening psychosis. -- TheMerriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature --This text refers to anout of print or unavailable edition of this title.
