书评 Amazon.com In the preface to A Moveable Feast , Hemingway remarkscasually that "if the reader prefers, this book may be regarded asfiction"--and, indeed, fact or fiction, it doesn''t matter, for hisslim memoir of Paris in the 1920s is as enchanting as anything madeup and has become the stuff of legend. Paris in the ''20s!Hemingway and his first wife, Hadley, lived happily on $5 a day andstill had money for drinks at the Closerie des Lilas, skiing in theAlps, and fishing trips to Spain. On every corner and at every cafétable, there were the most extraordinary people living wonderfullives and telling fantastic stories. Gertrude Stein invitedHemingway to come every afternoon and sip "fragrant, colorlessalcohols" and chat admid her great pictures. Ulysses has been labeled dirty, blasphemous, and unreadable. In a famous 1933 court decision, Judge John M. Woolsey declared itan emetic book--although he found it sufficiently unobscene toallow its importation into the United States--and Virginia Woolfwas moved to decry James Joyce's "cloacal obsession." None of theseadjectives, however, do the slightest justice to the novel. To thisday it remains the modernist masterpiece, in which the author takesboth Celtic lyricism and vulgarity to splendid extremes. It isfunny, sorrowful, and even (in a close-focus sort of way)suspenseful. And despite the exegetical industry that has sprung upin the last 75 years, Ulysses is also a compulsively readable book.Even the verbal vaudeville of the final chapters can be navigatedwith relative ease, as long as you're willing to be buffeted, tickled, challenged, and (occasionally) vexed by Joyce's sheercommand of the English language. Among other things, a novel is simply a long story, and the firstquestion about any

The Scarlet Pimpernel 100th Anniversary Edition
FromAudioFile With the stage debut of The Scarlet Pimpernel (1903), the BaronessOrczy invented the "masked avenger" genre of fiction--theswashbuckling hero of dual identity. Her progeny include Zorro,Superman, The Lone Ranger and many others. The Baroness's Pimpernelis a British fop who, in a play and series of popular novels, daringly spirited condemned innocents out of France during theReign of Terror. Hugh Laurie, best known Stateside as the foppishBertie Wooster in TV's "Wooster and Jeeves," plunges into these twoadventures with childlike relish. Yes, he is corny; yes, heoverdoes it; but irresistibly. That's what this fare is made for.As he reads, one pictures, not the dashing Leslie Howard, cinema'sPimpernel, but a little boy performing for the family behind hishomemade puppet theater. AS YOU LIKE IT(ISBN=9780553212907)
Amazon.co.uk Review As You Like It has long been admired as one of Shakespeare's mostexuberant early comedies, complete with one of the Bard's funniestand toughest heroines, Rosalind. Based on Thomas Lodge'sElizabethan novel Rosalynde, As You Like It follows thediscontented Orlando as he is exiled from the tyrannical Frenchcourt of Duke Frederick. By chance Frederick also banishesRosalind, daughter of the usurped Duke Senior. The play then movesto the Forest of Arden, where chaos and misrule ensue, as Rosalindcross dresses "all points like a man", disguised as the saucyGanymede and encourages the naive Orlando to "woo me, woo me, fornow I am in a holiday humour". Meanwhile her clown Touchstonecauses hilarity and havoc amongst the exiled lords and the pastoralinhabitants of the forest. The play concludes with Rosalind'sextraordinary "unmasking" Epilogue addressed to the audience, whereshe offers to "kiss as many of you as had beards that pleasedme".

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." Next to the exhortation at the beginning of Moby-Dick, "Call me Ishmael," the first sentence of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice must be among the most quoted in literature. And certainly what Melville did for whaling Austen does for marriage--tracing the intricacies (not to mention the economics) of 19th-century British mating rituals with a sure hand and an unblinking eye. As usual, Austen trains her sights on a country village and a few families--in this case, the Bennets, the Philips, and the Lucases. Into their midst comes Mr. Bingley, a single man of good fortune, and his friend, Mr. Darcy, who is even richer. Mrs. Bennet, who married above her station, sees their arrival as an opportunity to marry off at least one of her five daughters. Bingley is complaisant and easily charmed by the eldest Bennet girl, Jane; Darcy, however, is harder to please. Put off by Mrs. Bennet's vulgar

作者简介 Herman Melville was born in 1819 in New York City. After his father's death he left school for a series of clerical jobs before going to sea as a young man of nineteen. At twenty-one he shipped aboard the whaler Acushnet and began a series of adventures in the South Seas that would last for three years and form the basis for his first two novels, Typee and Omoo. Although these two novels sold well and gained for Melville a measure of fame, nineteenth-century readers were puzzled by the experiments with form that he began with his third novel, Mardi, and continued brilliantly in his masterpiece, Moby-Dick. During his later years spent working as a customs inspector on the New York docks, Melville published only poems, compiled in a collection entitled Battle-Pieces, and died in 1891 with Billy Budd, Sailor, now considered a classic, still unpublished.
