12岁的女孩霍莉从收养自己的瑞根家中出走后，被一个名叫乔西的女人重新收养了。乔西是一个充满爱心的退休教师，原本是教授艺术的。霍莉在她的帮助下，通过图画来呈现自己内心的情感。在画中，她表达了自己想要一个家的愿望。此后乔西对霍莉很是爱护。然而随着乔西的健忘症日益严重，两人互换角色，霍莉成了那个照顾人的人。也就在两人相依为命的日子中，霍莉真正体会到了家庭的含义。 本书于2007年被改编为同名电影，并获得第65届金球奖提名。
