What Lives in a Shell? (Let's Read and Find Out) 自然科学启蒙1:谁住在
The diversity of shelters in the animal world-bird nests, anttunnels, and the cave of a bear-is contrasted with the nature andfunction of the self-contained housing of snails, turtles, and somecrustaceans and mollusks. The softly toned watercolor illustrationsamplify the text and show children in different settings observingvarious shelled creatures. The transient nature of the hermit crabis described, as is the scallop's shell-snapping mode of mobility.Zoehfeld places less emphasis on scientific names but includesbroader coverage than Douglas Florian's Discovering Seashells(Scribners, 1986). She has written an easy-to-read, introductoryscience title.

Almost Gone (Let's Read and Find Out) 自然科学启蒙2:全都不见了ISBN97800
From Booklist Gr. 1-3. Caldecott HonorBook illustrator Jenkins applies his considerable talents to thecause of conservation in this book in the long-runningLet's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series. Using his signature cut-andtorn-paper collages, he shows 21 endangered species, accompanyingeach image with a few sentences about the animal's habitat, aparticular characteristic, and, sometimes, the reason for itsendangered status. The art is not to scale, but Jenkins often worksin text references to give kids an idea of relative size: a YangtzeRiver Dolphin "may grow to be eight feet long"; an Assam rabbitweighs "four or five pounds." As usual, Jenkins' artwork isfascinating. His papers, apparently handpainted, are carefullymatched to catch subtle variations of an animal's skin or a senseof the shagginess of its coat. The last spreads consider fourextinct animals and three species brought back from the brink bybreeding or protection programs. A map designating the range ofeach species concludes this nicely accom

Wiggling Worms at Work (Let's Read and Find Out) 自然科学启蒙2:在工作
This is a great book marred by a few unclear pictures. Thewell-organized text explains how worms improve the quality of soiland covers the basics about the animal's body structure, movement, diet, and reproduction. The writing is clear and engaging; in oneinstance, Pfeffer compares the segments on a worm's body to "thecoils on a Slinky toy." Although the collage artwork is visuallyappealing, some of the images are a bit confusing. In oneillustration accompanying the explanation of how a worm tunnels, the creature looks as if it has been chopped in two or torn up. Inanother, it looks as if it is decomposing. The book ends withsuggestions for examining a worm in the field and ascience-fair-type project using castings. Better choices includeKevin Holmes's Earthworms (Bridgestone, 1998), Michael ElsohnRoss's Wormology (Carolrhoda, 1996), and Bobbie Kalman's SquirmyWormy Composters (Crabtree, 1992; o.p.). K-Gr. 3. Tornado Alert (Let's Read and Find Out) 自然科学启蒙2:龙卷风警报ISBN978
Grade 1-3 Another excellent addition to this science seriesthat has opened up a host of subjects to young readers. This booktells what tornadoes look like, why they occur, when they occur, and what to do when one strikes. A few incidents of disastroustornadoes are mentioned, such as the time when a tornado inMinnesota lifted a passenger train from its tracks and carried it80 feet through the air. The writing is clear, concise, andrhythmic. Maestro's color drawings are also clear andunderstandable, and fit well with the book's design. This book isfor younger audiences than Fradin's Disaster ! Tornados (Childrens,1982). It should be just the thing for young readers interested inthe subject. Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Pub . Lib . ,Ill.
