Wiggling Worms at Work (Let's Read and Find Out) 自然科学启蒙2:在工作
This is a great book marred by a few unclear pictures. Thewell-organized text explains how worms improve the quality of soiland covers the basics about the animal's body structure, movement, diet, and reproduction. The writing is clear and engaging; in oneinstance, Pfeffer compares the segments on a worm's body to "thecoils on a Slinky toy." Although the collage artwork is visuallyappealing, some of the images are a bit confusing. In oneillustration accompanying the explanation of how a worm tunnels, the creature looks as if it has been chopped in two or torn up. Inanother, it looks as if it is decomposing. The book ends withsuggestions for examining a worm in the field and ascience-fair-type project using castings. Better choices includeKevin Holmes's Earthworms (Bridgestone, 1998), Michael ElsohnRoss's Wormology (Carolrhoda, 1996), and Bobbie Kalman's SquirmyWormy Composters (Crabtree, 1992; o.p.). K-Gr. 3. From the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Scienceseries, this book provides a good introduction to a familia

Planets in Our Solar System, The (Let's Read and Find Out) 自
Originally published in 1981, this title gets a facelift withthe addition of some new information, including a brief list of Websites, plus new illustrations. Though given to dogmatic statementslike "The most important part of the solar system is the sun,"Branley makes his points briefly and precisely, steering clear ofdistracting dialogue and side commentary. Also, rather than themore common one-planet-after-the-other tour, he groups togetherheavenly bodies, discussing temperature, size, and orbital lengthin comparative terms; the effect is to reinforce the idea of thesolar system as a system rather than an assemblage of isolatedelements. He finishes with instructions for a planetary mobile andseveral other simple projects. O'Malley creates a rudimentary storyline in his illustrations, in which an African-American version ofMs. Frizzle guides a class around a planetarium, and inserts smallastronomical photos into his cartoon scenes. Still one of the mostbasic books on the subject, this is a welcome re

Did a Dinosaur Drink This Water? (award-winning)妙想科学:恐龙喝的水和今
Wells, who explored topics such as large numbers in Can You Count to a Googol (2000) and the measurement of time in How Do You Know What Time It Is?(2002), now tackles the water cycle, explaining that the earth's water has been constantly recycled not just since dinosaur days but for billions of years. The simple text asks good questions and offers clearly worded answers, enhanced by lively, colorful ink-and-watercolor illustrations. In the pictures, two children travel in a helicopter-like gizmo all around the world, observing streams, rivers, oceans, rain, snow, glaciers, a dam, and so on. Readers will also see illustrations of evaporation and underground aquifers. The text ends with a plea for water conservation. A playful but sound introduction to the water cycle. What Lives in a Shell? (Let's Read and Find Out) 自然科学启蒙1:谁住在
The diversity of shelters in the animal world-bird nests, anttunnels, and the cave of a bear-is contrasted with the nature andfunction of the self-contained housing of snails, turtles, and somecrustaceans and mollusks. The softly toned watercolor illustrationsamplify the text and show children in different settings observingvarious shelled creatures. The transient nature of the hermit crabis described, as is the scallop's shell-snapping mode of mobility.Zoehfeld places less emphasis on scientific names but includesbroader coverage than Douglas Florian's Discovering Seashells(Scribners, 1986). She has written an easy-to-read, introductoryscience title.
