How Can I Keep From Singing?皮特·西格传记 英文原版
How Can I Keep from Singing? is the compelling story of howthe son of a respectable Puritan family became a consummateperformer and American rebel. Updated with new research andinterviews, unpublished photographs, and thoughtful comments fromPete Seeger himself, this is an inside history of the man CarlSandburg called “America’s Tuning Fork.” In the only biography onSeeger, David Dunaway parts the curtains on his life. Who is this rail-thin, eighty-eight-year-old with the five-stringbanjo, whose performances have touched millions of people for morethan seven decades? Bob Dylan called him a saint. Joan Baez said,“We all owe our careers to him.” But Seeger’s considerable musicalachievements were overshadowed by political controversy when hebecame perhaps the most blacklisted performer in American history. He was investigated for sedition, harassed by the FBI and the CIA,picketed, and literally stoned by conservative groups. Still, hesang. Today, Seeger remains an icon of conscience

During his thirty-seven years at Smith College, Newton Arvinpub-lished groundbreaking studies of Hawthorne, Whitman, Melville, and Longfellow that stand today as models of scholarship andpsycho-logical acuity. He cultivated friendships with the likes ofEdmund Wilson and Lillian Hellman and became mentor to TrumanCapote. A social radical and closeted homosexual, the circumspectArvin never-theless survived McCarthyism. But in September 1960 hisapartment was raided, and his cache of beefcake erotica wasconfiscated, plung-ing him into confusion and despair and provokinghis panicked betrayal of several friends. An utterly absorbing chronicle, The Scarlet Professor deftlycap-tures the essence of a conflicted man and offers a provocativeandunsettling look at American moral fanaticism. STORY OF MY LIFE, THE(ISBN=9780553213874)
As a young girl Keller was obstinate, prone to fits of violence, and seething with rage at her inability to express herself. But atthe age of 7 this wild child was transformed when, at the urging ofAlexander Graham Bell, Anne Sullivan became her teacher, an eventshe declares "the most important day I remember in all my life."(Sullivan herself had once been blind, but partially recovered hersight after a series of operations.) In a memorable passage, Kellerwrites of the day "Teacher" led her to a stream and repeatedlyspelled out the letters w-a-t-e-r on one of her hands whilepouring water over the other. This method proved a revelation:"That living world awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, joy, setit free! There were barriers still, it is true, but barriers thatcould in time be swept away." And, indeed, most of them were.

RUNNING IN THE FAMILY(ISBN=9780679746690)
Brightly coloured, sweet and painful, bloody-minded andotherworldly, [this book] achieves the status of legend. Margaret Atwood Eloquent, oblique, witty, full of light and feeling.Ondaatjesknowledge of the fragility and luck of life is very clear. So, too,is the grace and originality of his prose. The New Yorker Ondaatje has produced a remarkable book.Shimmering through thehaze of heat and memory is an impressionistic, sometimes surrealportrait of an exotic time and place now gone, a colonial paradisethat had its own rhythms and imperatives. Globe and Mail A beautiful, luscious book. Michael Ondaatje has depicted hisextraordinary family, who delighted in masks and costumes and loveaffairs that rainbowed over marriages in the kind of language thatmakes glory of their lives. He has gone on a poets journey to SriLanka (Ceylon), and the reader who travels with him enters a trulymagical world. Maxine Hong Kingston It sparkles with t

HOW READING CHANGED MY LIFE(ISBN=9780345422781)
A recurring theme throughout Anna Quindlen's How ReadingChanged My Life is the comforting premise that readers are neveralone. "There was waking, and there was sleeping. And then therewere books," she writes, "a kind of parallel universe in whichanything might happen and frequently did, a universe in which Imight be a newcomer but never really a stranger. My real, trueworld." Later, she quotes editor Hazel Rochman: "Reading makesimmigrants of us all. It takes us away from home, but, mostimportant, it finds homes for us everywhere." Indeed, Quindlen'sessays are full of the names of "friends," real or fictional--Anneof Green Gables and Heidi; Anthony Trollope and Jane Austen, toname just a few--who have comforted, inspired, educated, anddelighted her throughout her life. In four short essays Quindlenshares her thoughts on the act of reading itself ("It is like therubbing of two sticks together to make a fire, the act of reading,an improbable pedestrian task that leads to heat and light");analyzes the dif

GIFT FROM THE SEA(ISBN=9780679732419)
I found a 1955 printing of this book in an old waterfront cabinand was struck by the care with which the previous owner had readit. Eve (the name inscribed inside the front cover and then againabove the heading for chapter 3) made pencil marks on nearly everyparagraph of the book, underlining a phrase, highlighting manypassages with strong vertical marks, scratching out some words thatshe seems to have found superfluous and even x-ing out wholesections that apparently missed their mark with her altogether. Tworusting paper clips isolate several pages, absent any marking atall. Anne Morrow Lindbergh's lyrical words are still relevant andpresage so many of the themes of today's most popular books:simplicity, peaceful solitude, caring for the soul, a woman findingher place in society and life. I heard that the woman who had livedin the cabin had actually passed away some time before. Thank you,Eve, for your gift... from the sea.

OCTOBER 1964(ISBN=9780449983676) 英文原版
Heroes have a habit of growing larger over time, as do thearenas in which they excelled. The 1964 World Series between theYankees and Cardinals was coated in myth from the get-go. TheYankees represented the establishment: white, powerful, andseemingly invincible. The victorious Cards, on the other hand, werebaseball's rebellious future: angry and defiant, black, andchallenging. Their seven-game barnburner, played out against abackdrop of an America emerging from the Kennedy assassination, escalating the war in Vietnam, and struggling with civil rights, marked a turning point--neither the nation, nor baseball, wouldever be quite so innocent again. Halberstam, one of the greatreporters of the '60s, looks back in this marvelous and spiritedelegy to the era, the game, and players such as Mantle, Maris,Ford, Gibson, Brock, and Flood with a clear eye in search of thetruth that time has blurred into legend. His confident prose, diligent reporting, and deft analysis make it clear how much moreinteresting--and for
