SCARLET PROFESSOR, THE(ISBN=9780385494694) 英文原版
During his thirty-seven years at Smith College, Newton Arvinpub-lished groundbreaking studies of Hawthorne, Whitman, Melville, and Longfellow that stand today as models of scholarship andpsycho-logical acuity. He cultivated friendships with the likes ofEdmund Wilson and Lillian Hellman and became mentor to TrumanCapote. A social radical and closeted homosexual, the circumspectArvin never-theless survived McCarthyism. But in September 1960 hisapartment was raided, and his cache of beefcake erotica wasconfiscated, plung-ing him into confusion and despair and provokinghis panicked betrayal of several friends. An utterly absorbing chronicle, The Scarlet Professor deftlycap-tures the essence of a conflicted man and offers a provocativeandunsettling look at American moral fanaticism. "Fascinating A riveting character study Vividlycaptures the troubled times and too quickly forgotten life of thequietly courageous Arvin Werth has written one of the mostemotionally engaging and socially relevant b

HENRY CLAY(ISBN=9780812978957) 英文原版
In this engaging biography of an important American lawmaker,David and Jeanne Heidler paint a revealing portrait of Henry Clay,a man who was critical to the life of the nation in the tumultuous19th century. Never president but always in the arena, Clayis a remarkable architect of the Union, and we owe the Heidlers adebt for bringing him to life in these pages.—Jon Meacham,Pulitzer-Prize winning author of American Lion "Henry Clay's 49-year political career bridged theAmerica of Alexander Hamilton and the America of Abraham Lincoln.Like them, he labored to strengthen and preserve the Union, and tosecure its economic development through an enlightened alliancebetween private enterprise and public authority. Beautifullywritten, richly detailed, and wonderfully informative, David andJeanne Heidler's account of Clay's life is deeply sympathetic, yetnot uncritical. It should appeal to both academic and generalaudiences. These two accomplished historians have accorded a greatstatesman the biography he deser

HOW READING CHANGED MY LIFE(ISBN=9780345422781)
A recurring theme throughout Anna Quindlen's How ReadingChanged My Life is the comforting premise that readers are neveralone. "There was waking, and there was sleeping. And then therewere books," she writes, "a kind of parallel universe in whichanything might happen and frequently did, a universe in which Imight be a newcomer but never really a stranger. My real, trueworld." Later, she quotes editor Hazel Rochman: "Reading makesimmigrants of us all. It takes us away from home, but, mostimportant, it finds homes for us everywhere." Indeed, Quindlen'sessays are full of the names of "friends," real or fictional--Anneof Green Gables and Heidi; Anthony Trollope and Jane Austen, toname just a few--who have comforted, inspired, educated, anddelighted her throughout her life. In four short essays Quindlenshares her thoughts on the act of reading itself ("It is like therubbing of two sticks together to make a fire, the act of reading,an improbable pedestrian task that leads to heat and light");analyzes the dif

GIFT FROM THE SEA(ISBN=9780679732419)
I found a 1955 printing of this book in an old waterfront cabinand was struck by the care with which the previous owner had readit. Eve (the name inscribed inside the front cover and then againabove the heading for chapter 3) made pencil marks on nearly everyparagraph of the book, underlining a phrase, highlighting manypassages with strong vertical marks, scratching out some words thatshe seems to have found superfluous and even x-ing out wholesections that apparently missed their mark with her altogether. Tworusting paper clips isolate several pages, absent any marking atall. Anne Morrow Lindbergh's lyrical words are still relevant andpresage so many of the themes of today's most popular books:simplicity, peaceful solitude, caring for the soul, a woman findingher place in society and life. I heard that the woman who had livedin the cabin had actually passed away some time before. Thank you,Eve, for your gift... from the sea.

ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK(ISBN=9780385523394)
“Fascinating . . . The true subject of this unforgettable bookis female bonding and the ties that even bars can’t unbind.”—People (four stars) “I LOVED THIS BOOK. . . . It’s a story rich with humor, pathos, and redemption. What I did not expect from this memoir was theaffection, compassion, and even reverence that Piper Kermandemonstrates for all the women she encountered while she was lockedaway in jail. This book is not just a tale of prisons, drugs, crime, or justice; it is, simply put, a beautifully told storyabout how incredible women can be, and I will never forgetit.”—Elizabeth Gilbert, New York Times bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love “This book is impossible to put down because [Kerman] could beyou. Or your best friend. Or your daughter.” —Los AngelesTimes “Moving . . . transcends the memoir genre’s usualself-centeredness to explore how human beings can always surpriseyou.”—USA Today “It’s a compelling awakening, and a harrowing

TRAPLINES(ISBN=9781400031115) 英文原版
After nearly 30 years away, Rember, a Harvard-educated Englishprofessor at Idaho's Albertson College and holder of various oddjobs, returns to his backwoods roots in Stanley, Idaho. Thehardscrabble wilderness of his youth has seen major changes: pushedto the brink of environmental disaster from nuclear waste runoffand overbuilding, it has been reclaimed by well-meaningpreservationists and returned to something that resembles home, only "what once was familiar was unfamiliar. What once was real wasno longer real." Native fish have long disappeared, replaced byfarmed fish; wild game replaced by protected "wildlife." Yet,sunsets are still magical and the old fences and ruined cabinsstill have stories to tell. As Rember relives his youth, his focusmoves away from the ways his surroundings have changed to the wayshe has changed. As he revisits his home grounds-looking at theantlers his trapper/fishing guide father collected; finding an oldphoto of his grandma, who lived "on the ragged far edge ofconsensus reality"

LOCUST AND THE BIRD, THE(ISBN=9780307472311) 英文原版
While I was reading Hanan Al Shaykh’s new book, The Locustand the Bird , my regret as an author was not to have knownKamila, Hanan’s mother, the extravagant narrator of this book. Whata woman! What a storyteller! She reminds me of my belovedgrandmother (who is in many of my books), and many other women ofher generation that I knew, who were manipulative in order tosurvive, who lied in order to establish the truth, and, most ofall, so full of life and passion. When I finished the book I hadone major thought: this book needs to be made into a movie, butthis is the kind of story one needs to be a real Lebanese in orderto turn it into a movie. That was my other regret as a movie maker. But most of all I felt extremely lucky to spend time with someoneso intelligent, full of humor and love. --MarjaneSatrapi
